Characteristics and differences of the two manufacturing methods
The outstanding feature
Distilled chlorine dioxide
- Our production process: Chlorine dioxide is taken as a pure gas and, using a complex distillation process, is passed into cooled water and bound within it.
- Purity: Virtually no impurities are present. CDL is highly pure.
- Concentration: The chlorine dioxide content is between 0.29 and 0.30% (2900–3000 ppm). Since chlorine dioxide gas is passed through chilled water over an extended period, the concentration of the solution may fluctuate slightly. This minimal deviation is hardly significant in practice, but it may be slightly noticeable in the color compared to the standard solution.

Color: The yellow color of the distilled chlorine dioxide solution is slightly lighter than that of standard CDL. This is due, firstly, to its high purity (no coloring impurities such as chlorine or chlorite), and secondly, to the minimally fluctuating chlorine dioxide content (between 0.29 and 0.30%).
- Shelf life: The shelf life is approximately 9 months (best before date).

- Our production process: By mixing two substances, we initiate an oxidative process in which a very precise 0.299% chlorine dioxide solution (2999 ppm) is produced.
- Purity: Minor impurities may be present, but these are not noticeable in terms of effect or taste.
- Content: The chlorine dioxide content is very precisely 0.299% (2999 ppm). The oxidation method allows for very precise production.
- Color: The yellow color of standard chlorine dioxide solution is slightly more intense than that of distilled CDL. This is due, firstly, to the more precise chlorine dioxide content of 0.299%, and secondly, to the small amounts of coloring impurities such as chlorite.
- Shelf life: A shelf life of at least 9 months (best before date) is achieved.

Since spring 2025, new measuring technology has allowed us to precisely monitor the chlorine dioxide content directly during production and optimally adjust the process to a target of 3000 ppm chlorine dioxide content.

What is CDL / chlorine dioxide?
CDL (short for chlorine dioxide solution) is a chlorine-oxygen compound which is highly effective at killing pathogens.
It should not be confused with chlorine. It differs from it in its molecular structure and its effect. After the reaction, it decomposes into small amounts of oxygen, table salt, and water.
Chlorine dioxide solutions are approved for disinfection of drinking water according to German Drinking Water Ordinance §11.
How effective is CDL?
CDL is highly effective against viruses, bacteria, fungi and more.
The pathogen-killing effect is based on the natural process of oxidation. Harmful microorganisms are destroyed so quickly that their cells are unable to develop resistance to chlorine dioxide.
CDL is significantly more effective than H2O2 & chlorine.
Is CDL safe?
Chlorine dioxide has been studied in scientific studies.
CDL is a chlorine-oxygen compound from which no toxic compounds can be formed during use.
After the reaction, it decomposes into oxygen, table salt and water.
The safety of the drinking water has been proven in several studies. For example, in a highly publicized placebo-controlled, double-blind study at the University of Ihio, USA.
Furthermore, it is an officially approved substance in Germany for the treatment of drinking water.

How do you use chlorine dioxide?
CDL is approved for use in drinking water.
Ready-to-use solutions can be dropped directly into water.
Two-component solutions are activated beforehand.
Simply use the enclosed pipette or the dropper insert installed in the bottle.

Storage & Shelf Life
In its activated state, chlorine dioxide decomposes very slowly, naturally, into table salt and oxygen.
Therefore, CDL has a shelf life of approximately 9-10 months. It should be stored in the refrigerator, ideally at around 8° Celsius.
This is different for unactivated 2-component solutions, such as our CDL eXtra or DUO. These can be stored for several years.
